Dress Code

The Club’s dress code has been an important and valued part of the Westfield Tennis Club since its inception. Over the years the code has been revised to reflect current trends, though the “all white” dress code has remained the tradition at the Club.  The following reflects the Board’s clarification and updating of the code for the 2011 Season and beyond. The purpose is to have all players on the courts – adult and junior members and guests – dressed in white clothing (with the minor exceptions as noted in the Code).

1. All members and their guests are required to wear white clothing, as described below, when playing at the club. When a member brings a guest, the member is to inform the guest of the dress code prior to coming to the club. It is the responsibility of the member that their guest is in compliance with the dress code.

2. Shirts are to be white. They may be trimmed with a colored stripe no more than one inch wide limited to the areas around the neck and sleeves. Diagonal or vertical bands of color are not permitted. Men’s and boy’s shirts must have sleeves. Colored piping on seams of shirts up to ¼” wide is permitted.

3. Shorts and skirts are to be white. They may be trimmed with colored material no more than one inch wide. The trim may be at the end of the shorts or at the hem line or down the side. Diagonal or vertical bands of color in other areas are not permitted. Colored piping on seams of shorts and skirts up to ¼” wide is permitted.

4. Tennis dresses are to be white. They may be trimmed with a colored stripe no more than one inch wide limited to the areas around the neck and sleeves and hem line. Colored piping on seams of dresses up to ¼” wide is permitted. Diagonal or vertical bands of color in other areas are not permitted. The application of stripes is to be at a minimum for both shirts, blouses, shorts, skirts and dresses.

5.  Shirts, shorts and dresses may have small manufacturer’s logs, (such as the Adidas 3 stripe logo on sleeves) or a small insignia of club identification.

6. Socks are to be white. They may be trimmed with colored material no more than one inch wide and may also have a manufacturer’s logo.

7. Caps, hats and visors are to be white and may also include a small insignia of the manufacturer or club identification. The underside of the brim may be any color.

8. Shoes are to be designed for tennis use and they are to be at least 70% white. Laces are to be white. Running shoes, basketball sneakers, cross trainers, etc. are not acceptable.

9. Outer garments such as warm up suits and sweaters may be of any color.

In order to achieve compliance with the above dress code, the club manager and board members will warn any member or guest if they are not in compliance with the code and the member’s name will be noted. If a second violation of the code occurs for the same member or their guest, the member will receive a letter from the board advising them of this second offense. Should a third violation occur the board will take necessary actions to resolve the issue.

COURT PRACTICES

1. The hours of operation for the 11 Har-Tru courts are from 8 am to dark. For the hard surface courts the hours of operation are from 9 am to dark. The Platform Tennis court shall be in operation from October 15th until May 1st each year and play to be between 8 am and dark

2. Courts may not be reserved, except for tournament play. At least two players are required to hold a court for play.

3. When all of the Har-Tru courts are in use and members are waiting to play, members playing shall be limited to one set of singles or two sets of doubles. When the above number of set(s) are completed a member is to announce “Court Open”.  Members will be alerted that other members are waiting by a raised red flag behind Court 1.  It is not the obligation of waiting adult members to determine the length of time played on each court; it is the responsibility of the members who have completed one set of single or two sets of doubles to relinquish the court.  The number of sets played does not start when the members begin to wait for courts, but includes the sets played prior to the arrival of members waiting for a court. Once members are waiting, the playing members shall yield the court once they have completed the number of sets set forth above.

4. When the courts are full, members are required to limit their warm-up time to ten minutes.

5. Adult members may ask Junior members to yield a court at any time.

6. Cell phone and texting use is restricted to the parking lot or inside the club house (not on the terrace) and such devices should be turned off and not to be used on the courts.

7. Members may have a guest to the club with the following requirements: a) the guest fee is to be paid in advance; b) the same guest is limited to only one playing time per month.

8. Good sportsmanship shall govern all play and it is suggested that members become familiar with a publication of the USTA entitled “The Code” which reviews many common situations on courts.

9. Board members and the club’s manager may request members who are not complying with the above and the dress code to change their practice.

10. Good tennis etiquette requires that members do not walk across any court while a game is in progress. (In particular, Court 1 or 3) Wait until the game (not the point) is over before crossing. Also, members should return any balls hit on to their court from another court, always being respectful and waiting until the point on the other court is completed.  Please be polite and courteous to your fellow members.
